The Future of Snapchat
When you think “Snapchat” what comes to mind? For me it’s: Selfies. Brunch. Pets. My cooking skills when trying that new Tasty recipe. More Selfies. Regrettable videos from a night out with friends.…You get the picture.
Since its launch in 2011, Snapchat has been the go-to source of real-time photo and video sharing between friends in the form of 10-second clips. But the real draw is that photo or video disappears upon completion. Could it get any better? It. Just. Did.
Snapchat has launched paid, in-platform options for its everyday consumer and businesses alike in the form of “on-demand” geofilters.
Yes, I know, geo-filters aren’t new. Sponsored geo-filters have been available on the platform for a while now. But these new “on-demand” filters will cover a much smaller area and cost a heck of a lot less. In other words, accessible to you and me — not just the big players with even bigger budgets.
So how does it work? First you will need to design your filter. (Don’t worry Snapchat will be offering some templates as well.). You will then choose the radius and duration of your custom geo-filter and your price will fluctuate accordingly. Of course, there are guidelines depending on if your filter is for personal or company use.
Snapchat is providing a service that not only helps other people and companies leverage their own names, brands and events, but it also borders on experiential marketing gold.
Imagine brunch on Saturday morning at SqWires or the Wheelhouse downtown. Customers are getting ready to Snapchat their friends a glorious mimosa and waffle combo, and they see a custom geo-filter that has the logo and a phrase like”The Best Bloody Mary Bar In STL”or “Home of The Bottomless Mimosas.” Now all their friends know they’re dining at the location and get some brand info on what the venue offers.
So, stay ahead of the competition -whether that be your frenemy, the bar across the street, or the agency downtown -and start snapping because the future of Snapchat is looking bright, my friends.
